Bake a cake and help Visit from the Stork ‘make some dough’
Have you ever dreamed of taking part in The Great British Bake Off? Are you an aspiring baker who only ever bakes for friends and family but wishes the world could see your cakes? Do you need an excuse to make (and eat) some cake? Well you’re in luck – because next month Visit from the Stork is hosting Salford’s first ever Great VFTS Bake Off competition as part of a Family Fun Day and our 10for10 campaign.
We’re looking for home bakers to donate their time and ingredients and take part in an exclusive competition in a bid to become VFTS Bake Off champion 2024.
Our competition entries will be judged by pre-chosen participants and willing cake-eaters who will judge cakes on both taste and presentation according to our categories and will donate their £ to taste all the cakes! Cakes will then be sold per slice to visitors at our Fun Day on Saturday 10th August to help us raise more funds.
As it is our 10th birthday year and our campaign is to raise £10,000 – our Bake off competition has a ’10’ theme. Bakers who enter our competition can get creative and choose to bake anything within this theme (a cake with 10 layers anyone?) – or they can choose to enter the ‘showstopper’ category and bake their best ’10th birthday cake’ – think unicorns, Minecraft, cartoons, colours, games or anything a 10 year old would dream of. We would of course like all the cake entries to feed a minimum of 10 people (more if possible!) and all allergens would need to be listed on the ingredients list.

Or if you love to eat cake rather than bake it – well you can also apply to be a judge on the day as well. For a minimum donation of £5, you will get a scoring card and a tasting platter of all the cake entries before they open to general sale. You can cast your vote and choose your Bake Off champion!
Whilst we may all be excited – and hungry- at the thought of baking and eating cake, I would like to say a little something about why we are doing this event. Of course, it is a little fun as always with us, but everyday we recognise that for many of the families we support, even having the ingredients in the cupboard to bake a cake (flour, eggs, milk etc) is a luxury that some have never seen in the last few years.
The numbers of families who live in constant food poverty in Greater Manchester is rising (currently 1 in 3 children) and the use of the 270 foodbanks and pantries that are available across GM has also risen dramatically. We work with foodbank and pantry partners such as Humans MCR, Salford Food Parcels, Lucie’s Pantry, Salford Food Fayre and Manchester Central community foodbank to ensure families who attend our sessions and access our services have food for themselves and their children.
Over 70% of our clients who have accessed our free baby essentials have done so because they are having to choose between buying food, paying bills and buying essentials such as nappies, toiletries and baby milk.
Providing a baby essentials pack for a family including formula milk costs us around £25 – but means that children will get to eat and cupboards will be slightly fuller and parents will be less stressed and able to concentrate on ways to get themselves out of their crisis situations. Families in Salford and Manchester need our services to continue – so every penny we raise through our Bake Off will go towards our core services of providing the essential items parents and children need the most. We are extremely grateful for all time and ingredients donated as well as anyone who helps us raise funds by eating the wonderful cakes that are bound to be made!
